Climate Action Hub – Thermal Action Project

The Climate Action Hub at WDCVS is exploring a project to help tackle energy poverty by using thermal imaging to identify heat loss in homes and provide advice and referrals.

Thermal imaging can help identify draughty windows and doors, damp spots, slumped insulation, uninsulated pipework etc.

At this stage, we are keen to engage with local community groups to better understand:

  • Whether there is a need for this type of project locally
  • Levels of interest in partnership or involvement
  • And to ensure we are not taking forward work that could be more appropriately led by an existing community organisation

Importantly, we would not want to take a project — or associated funding — away from the community if there is an organisation that feels well-placed to deliver it.

We’d appreciate if you could fill out this quick expression of interest survey (8 questions – 5 minutes). If you’d rather chat about it over the phone, please let us know and we can arrange a call.

About the project

The proposed model is based on existing initiatives in Scotland (https://www.communityheatteam.org/). It focuses on supporting households to reduce heat loss and energy costs.

During the winter months (after sunset), trained volunteers visit homes using handheld infrared cameras to identify areas of heat loss, such as:

  • Draughty windows and doors
  • Missing or slumped insulation
  • Uninsulated pipework

Following each visit, households receive a report including thermal images, clear explanations, and practical “quick-win” actions to improve energy efficiency. The project also connects residents to further support, such as Home Energy Scotland for funding and retrofitting, or Citizen’s Advice for support managing energy bills and suppliers.

Free training for volunteers would be available through the Community Heat Team, along with templates for promotional materials and project delivery support.

We are currently gathering feedback from community organisations to help shape the next steps and would really value your input.

Thank you! We look forward to hearing your thoughts.
