Source to Sea Litter Survey
Does your group do litter pick events? Record what you find with the Marine Conservation Society to help find solutions and campaign for positive changes such as plastic alternatives and bottle deposit schemes. 80% of marine litter comes from land-based sources finding its way into streams, rivers or drains and ending up in the ocean, where it causes problems for ecosystems and sea life. As part of their inland litter cleans, the Marine Conservation Society use the data you collect to track rubbish back to its source. The survey is available online, as a print-out, and in a child-friendly format. Find out more from the Marine Conservation Society

The research found, when compared with an unprotected door, flexible synthetic rubber tape reduced water leakage by 99%, duct tape by 97 to 98% and sandbags by 70%. The researchers commented that whilst the work challenged established assumptions about flood protection, duct tape wasn’t a substitute for permanent, professionally installed flood resilience measures. However, as gaffer and duct tape is cheap and readily available, it’s a good idea to have some on hand just in case. Read more on the BBC
