Did you know that idling for just 30 seconds produces twice as much air pollution as switching off and restarting your engine?
Air pollution is one of the largest environmental risks to human health and is linked to a range of health problems, including heart and lung disease. Everyone’s health is impacted by air pollution, but some people are affected more than others:
Children are particularly at risk from the health harms of air pollution because their airways are smaller and still developing, and engine fumes concentrate at child height.
Older people, pregnant people and people with existing health conditions are also disproportionately affected by the health harms of air pollution.
You can reduce your contribution to air pollution by walking, wheeling, cycling or switching to public transport when you can. If you have to drive, remember to switch your engine off when you stop!
By tackling dirty air, we can also boost our local economy as breathing in cleaner air improves our productivity, reduces sick days and helps alleviate the burden on our NHS.
