NHSGGC is developing a new strategy for Palliative Care and Care Around Dying. This isn’t the start of the conversation. In 2025, over 200 people, patients, families, carers, staff, and partner organisations shared their experiences of care, and over 200 came together at Glasgow City Chambers to explore what needed to change. From everything that was heard, five draft priorities have been developed:
- Early identification and person-centred care planning of palliative care needs
- Equitable, coordinated, responsive care across all settings
- Enhanced access to information, digital inclusion, and community empowerment around palliative care
- Accessible and compassionate bereavement support for all
- A supported, skilled, and resilient workforce
What NHSGGC is asking now is whether those priorities are clear, whether they cover everything, and whether anything important has been missed. Your feedback, and the feedback of the people you work alongside, will shape the final strategy.
The survey closes on Sunday 1st June 2026 and can be completed here: https://link.webropolsurveys.com/S/03F8ED57552C09A4
Background information and the draft priorities presentation are available on the NHSGGC website: https://www.nhsggc.scot/downloads/palliative-care-information-sheet-and-background-to-strategy-development/ https://www.nhsggc.scot/downloads/palliative-care-and-care-around-dying-draft-strategic-priorities-presentation/
Please do share this as widely as you can within your networks.
Palliative care affects almost everyone at some point, last year alone, around 11,628 people in Greater Glasgow and Clyde had a palliative care need, and an estimated 65,000 people were affected by bereavement. The more voices that respond to this consultation, the better the final strategy will be.
