Insulation Scams: Council Grants

Recently there have been reports from South Ayrshire of cold callers who say they are installing insulation on behalf of the council. They claim they can offer local residents a discount on any work carried out and ask to make an appointment for a home visit.

Several homeowners who have agreed to have a ‘free’ loft survey carried out have been provided with misleading information about the safety of their existing insulation. In some cases, the ‘surveyor’ says the insulation is toxic and is causing health issues in order to panic the householder into making a quick decision. They may also wrongly say that a govermnent or council grant is available to fund the installation of new insulation.

If you are told about serious defects in your house or shown pictures of mould in your roof space, get a second opinion before starting any work. Don’t provide any information to a cold callerand avoid arranging to make an appointment for a salesperson to visit your home. If a cold caller claims to be working for or with the local council, hang up andphone the council to verify their identity.
